The Location

Located about 10 minutes south of Tulum, surrounded by Jungle.
We unpack and setup our gear in the parking area near the road and get ready to hump it all in to the the cenote.. The excitement builds.... Your guide gives you a thorough briefing and plans the dive with feedback from the divers.
After a hike about 150 metres along a narrow lumpy path through the jungle, before us opens up a beautiful sight, Cenote Angelita. The moment is upon us; We walk to the edge, take a big step and drop 2 meters into the deep blue water.

The Dive

From the surface, the water looks clear up close but hazy below you. It sure looks deep! After a buoyancy check for all and the ok is given you begin your descent. in the first few metres you see nothing but blueness all round then slowly at about 18m/60ft you begin to see what looks like a strange wispy bottom appearing below with a few ghostly, bare limbed tree trunks, bushes and branches sticking out. As it becomes clearer you begin to feel the first effects of narcosis at the same time as you see the hydrogen sulfide cloud spread out below. At the top of the cloud you stop and take a look around, everything appears surreal and you start feeling really spooky. Maybe it's the effects of the nitrogen in your brain or is it the weird sights around you.
Descending through the cloud, is that rotten eggs you smell in this brownish murk? What am I doing here you say to yourself, after bumping into a branch or two in the murk you are through and the water is very clear, but below... your light beam is swallowed up in blackness. You are already at 33m/100ft and you go a little farther down and move away from the slope of the cone of debris in the middle and look up at the dim glow of light coming through the foggy layer above. No time to hang around although that abyss is calling to you. It's time to make a nice slow ascent.
On the way up you have time to explore some interesting nooks and crannies around the perimeter of the cenote. After a safety stop you ascend to the surface, you can see the sky, the trees and bushes around the edge well before you break the surface and back into the jungle. It all seems unreal now. Now you have to scramble up a short muddy slope with your gear on, pulling yourself up with a rope, all part of the experience.
Now that was a real Maya Diving adventure.
